When the Dawn Breaks Over
A long time ago, something went wrong with Magic. Time split in half during the span of time between one moment and the next. Essentially, you have year 0, minute 0, and second 0 (000 for short), and some jerkoff went and shoved two thousand years into the space between 000 and 001 (probably at 000.842).
The current world sprang into being, with a specific amount of time allotted to exist before Time's fuckup fixed itself: 2000 years.
Because Time has gone out of whack (and Time may well have gone out of whack because of Magic going psycho with a candlestick in the library), Magic has become cannibalistic (no, Magic hasn't gone and confused candlesticks for eating utensils; it's just that Mages "eat" the magic of lesser Mages). A mage (or palo) must enslave a mage of lesser strength (make them a palolo) in order for their magic to be fully effective.
